Atlus has confirmed that Persona 4 Revival will feature adjustments to problematic dialogue and scenes, including homophobic and misogynistic content from the original game. The remake, announced during the Xbox showcase with a release date of February 18, 2027, aims to be more fitting for the modern world.
Atlus addresses controversial content
In an interview with Anime Corner, Persona series general producer Kazuhisa Wada stated that while the core story and characters remain unchanged, the way certain expressions are handled has been revised. He highlighted Yosuke as an example, noting that his insensitive comments toward outsiders have been lightened. 'We wanted to lighten that up and make it a little bit more fitting for the world that we live in now,' Wada explained.
Yosuke's problematic behavior
Yosuke is known among fans for making misogynistic and homophobic remarks, such as signing up female friends for a beauty pageant without their consent and making jabs at Kanji's sexuality. In the original, these actions were played for laughs with no character growth. The remake will tweak his dialogue to be less offensive, though Wada emphasized that no core character traits have been altered.
Cut romance and new content
Fans may recall that Yosuke was originally intended as a male romance option but was cut during development. Wada confirmed that no major changes to the main cast are planned, suggesting this feature will not be added. However, pre-release footage indicates alterations to the beauty pageant scene, and Wada confirmed entirely new content beyond the original and Golden versions, though details remain under wraps.
Visual and gameplay improvements
Persona 4 Revival will feature overhauled graphics and new battle mechanics, building on the success of Persona 3 Reload. The remake aims to preserve the beloved story while addressing outdated elements, ensuring it resonates with contemporary audiences.
