Police have arrested a 34-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy following a stabbing on a busy high street in Chingford. The incident occurred on Old Church Road, in the Chingford Mount area, at around 5pm on July 8.
Emergency response and injuries
Emergency services, including London's Air Ambulance, attended the scene as shoppers looked on. Paramedics took the 34-year-old man to a major trauma centre, where his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Arrests and charges
The injured man has been arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon. A 17-year-old boy has also been detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody pending further enquiries, the police said.
Road closures and impact
Police sealed off Old Church Road between Salisbury Road and Albert Crescent for several hours on the evening of July 8, diverting several bus routes. Chingford and Woodford Green MP Iain Duncan Smith expressed concern about the incident.
MP's statement
"This incident will understandably be concerning, particularly for parents and families, given that it occurred on the high street during the afternoon shortly after the end of the school day," the 72-year-old said. "Since being informed of the incident, I have been in contact with the Borough Commander. I have been assured that there will be an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance to residents. I will continue to work closely with the police to address the rise in crime and antisocial behaviour on the Mount. It is clear there is more to do."
Appeal for witnesses
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting CAD 6489/08JUL.
