London Naked Bike Ride Sparks Hygiene Concerns Over Rental Bikes
Naked Bike Ride Hygiene Fears Over London Rentals

London's annual World Naked Bike Ride has stirred up a new wave of anxiety among commuters regarding the cleanliness of shared bicycles. The event, which took place over the weekend, saw more than 1,000 cyclists participating in the nude to protest car culture and oil dependency while celebrating body freedom. However, a significant number of participants used rental bikes from Santander Cycles and Lime Bikes, leading to widespread criticism on social media.

Public Reaction to Naked Bike Ride

On Reddit, users expressed their disgust. User u/BrofessorDumbelldore noted, 'A good 50% put their bare arse on Santander/Lime Bikes.' Another user, u/ElegantBob, commented, 'I worry about skid marks.' User u/Tequilasquirrel added, 'Shared bikes no. F***ing yuck, as well as sweaty arse, there's fungal infections, etc.' Many called for better hygiene practices, such as using towels or sanitizers.

Concerns Over Hygiene and Cleanliness

Users like u/Ok-Personality-6630 confessed a 'new fear unlocked,' while u/Outside-Parfait-8935 stated, 'Using public bikes is absolutely gross. Nobody wants to share a bike seat with some stranger’s skid marks.' Others questioned whether TfL and Lime would clean the bikes after the event.

Lime Bike Response

A Lime spokesperson told Metro, 'Lime bikes have become part of the fabric of London, with rather less fabric in evidence this weekend than usual. As with any ride, we ask that people leave our bikes in the condition they’d want to find them. For safety reasons, we’d always encourage everyone to wear appropriate clothing when cycling.' They added that bikes are regularly pressure cleaned with recycled rainwater but did not specify the next cleaning schedule.

Event Organizers' Recommendations

The World Naked Bike Ride organizers recommend wearing shorts for safety but state clothing is optional. They urge participants to cover the saddle if going bare-bottomed, for everyone's benefit. They also provided a list of bike hire options, including the London Bicycle Tour Company. Metro has contacted TfL and the London Bicycle Tour Company for further comment.
