Kjell Nilsson, Mad Max 2 star, dies at 76

Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish actor best known for playing the villainous Lord Humungus in the 1981 film Mad Max 2 (also titled The Road Warrior), has died at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 2 in Queensland, Australia, after a prolonged battle with end-stage kidney disease, according to a statement posted to his official Facebook page.

Health Struggles and Final Days

The statement, published on July 3, revealed that Nilsson had been undergoing dialysis three times a week for four and a half years. Describing his journey as 'long and painful,' the post noted that he faced 'countless battles' including the gradual loss of bodily autonomy. On June 28, after careful consideration, Nilsson decided to stop dialysis, opting to 'take back control over his pain and his body.' His final days were 'filled with joy, gratitude, peace, and acceptance,' the message added, concluding: 'He did it his way.'

The post also highlighted that in 2022, medical professionals had told Nilsson he would not survive until his first Christmas after kidney failure. He defied that prognosis, celebrating four more Christmases and gaining 'four precious extra years with the people he loved most.' A memorial ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Career and Life

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Nilsson was also a competitive weightlifter. He moved to Australia in 1980 to train for the Moscow Olympics, though the United States-led boycott prevented his participation. During his time in Australia, he met actress Kate Ferguson, whom he later married in Sweden. Ferguson encouraged him to return to Australia to pursue acting, leading to his iconic role as the masked, muscle-bound antagonist Lord Humungus in Mad Max 2, a film that earned critical acclaim and cemented his place in cult cinema.

His other screen credits include the 1982 musical comedy The Pirate Movie, the 1984 TV movie Man of Letters, and the 1987 film The Edge of Power, where he played a nurse. After his acting career, Nilsson worked as a weight-training coach, inspiring many, according to his representative Chris Carbaugh, who told TMZ that Nilsson was a 'wonderful person' who 'embraced the role' and loved the Mad Max fanbase.
