Trump's Financial Disclosures Show $2.2bn in Earnings
Former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich argues that President Donald Trump's financial disclosures reveal massive corruption, with Trump earning at least $2.2bn last year, largely from cryptocurrency ventures and real estate deals that appear tied to his political decisions.
According to Reich, Trump reported earning more than $1bn from several cryptocurrency ventures alone, including CIC Digital, a Trump Organization affiliate behind his memecoin $Trump, and World Liberty Financial, co-founded by Trump, his sons, and the family of special envoy Steve Witkoff. Combined with other holdings like real estate, Trump's total earnings reached $2.2bn, compared to $622m in 2024 before his return to the presidency.
Crypto Policies and Market Timing
Reich highlights that Trump embraced crypto as a candidate in 2024 and then invested heavily. Since taking office, he has installed friendly regulators to oversee digital assets and pushed for landmark crypto legislation to free crypto from security classifications, which would require disclosures.
Trump's investment accounts made over 20,000 trades last year, many timed to benefit from his public announcements. For example, one day before announcing a 90-day pause on tariffs, his accounts made 327 individual stock purchases valued up to $250,000 each. The next day, the S&P 500 soared nearly 10%.
Foreign Real Estate Deals
Entities from the Middle East paid about $300m to Trump's businesses last year, more than any other foreign region. Reich notes a $400m jet gifted by the Qatari royal family, which will transfer to Trump's presidential library foundation after he leaves office.
A White House spokesperson stated that neither Trump nor his family 'has ever engaged – or will ever engage – in conflicts of interest.' Reich dismisses this, saying such deals make it impossible to judge whether Trump works for America or himself.
Reich's Assessment: Corruption and Narcissism
Reich argues Trump believes he has nothing to lose in his second term, having survived two impeachments and not facing re-election. He quotes Trump's past statement: 'The president can’t have a conflict of interest … because everything a president does in some ways is like a conflict of interest.'
Reich concludes that Trump is a malignant narcissist focused solely on his own wealth and power, with no conflicts of interest because he only has one interest: himself.
