GTA 6 previews reveal affinity mechanic, Criminal Profile

New GTA 6 previews have confirmed an affinity mechanic between protagonists Jason and Lucia, a reworked Honour system called Criminal Profile, and other details from a hands-off demo led by Rockstar's co-studio head Rob Nelson. The previews, published by IGN and The New York Times, follow the Netflix gameplay preview that aired earlier this week.

Affinity mechanic and relationship impact

IGN's preview describes an affinity mechanic where Jason and Lucia can strengthen their relationship as they commit crimes together. While this does not provide gameplay benefits, it will influence the story and certain cut scenes, potentially leading to multiple endings depending on whether players nurture a romantic relationship or keep them as work partners.

Rob Nelson explained, 'They will remain partners in crime. You will always have the benefit of working together and having each other’s back – whether they’re romantically close or not doesn’t change that. They will still work together. It’s really about what you want for them, their story, and how it plays out. Whether you’ve nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out.'

Grounded gameplay and Criminal Profile

Rockstar aims to make GTA 6 less overpowering than previous entries. Citizens may fight back if provoked, and players can taunt or threaten with a holstered weapon by pressing the aim button, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. Nelson said, 'I think in previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful. You were the only one with an invisible arsenal hidden away. Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in GTA 6 is not like that.'

The Criminal Profile system, a reworked Honour system from Red Dead Redemption 2, changes reputation based on interactions. Even minor crimes like littering affect it, while self-defence shootings have less impact than unprovoked violence. Carjacking also requires more effort, with some vehicles needing tools like a key cloner, limiting access until later in the game.

Map size and role-playing elements

The New York Times confirmed that GTA 6's map is three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's. Rockstar also emphasizes role-playing elements, as seen in the Netflix preview where players can check fridges or watch TV. Nelson hopes players will 'get up, have a cup of coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise,' and noted his own playthrough exceeded 80 hours, covering the main story and optional activities.

Nelson also revealed that GTA 6's non-playable characters were created without procedural generation, featuring over 600,000 unique animations—double the amount in Red Dead Redemption 2. YouTuber TGG has previewed the game and plans multiple deep dive videos covering the Criminal Profile system, Wanted level mechanics, and driving compared to GTA 5.
