Google is seeking federal approval to release 32 million mosquitoes infected with a harmless bacterium as part of an ambitious public health project in California and Florida. The initiative, called Debug, aims to reduce populations of disease-carrying mosquitoes using the Sterile Insect Technique.
How the Plan Works
Only female mosquitoes spread viruses like West Nile, dengue, and Zika when they bite humans. Males feed solely on plant nectar. Google's researchers plan to infect mosquitoes with Wolbachia, a parasitic bacterium that naturally occurs in many insects and is harmless to humans. In mosquitoes, Wolbachia interferes with reproduction, making eggs non-viable and reducing the population over time.
According to a notice in the Federal Register, the first year would see up to 16 million mosquitoes released in Florida, followed by another 16 million in California during the second year. Google intends to use robots and AI-powered visual sorting systems to rear and separate the insects by sex, releasing only males to target wild Culex mosquitoes, which carry West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis.
Public Health Impact
West Nile virus can cause fever, skin rashes, and fatigue, and in rare cases leads to severe neurological disease, paralysis, or brain damage. St. Louis encephalitis is a potentially fatal brain inflammation. Rentokil, a pest control company, noted that climate change and urbanization are making mosquito-borne illnesses more common, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions.
Local Concerns
However, some residents are skeptical. Brent Nye, a Florida local, expressed concerns about unintended consequences, stating he would prefer other states to experiment first. The Debug FAQ page says Google is working with local governments and communities to address concerns. The Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing the Experimental Use Permit application and accepting public feedback until Friday.
