Emmerdale's Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) has never been bothered by a brush with the law, but there is a first time for everything. Punching someone's lights out or stealing a car are crimes more befitting of his rap sheet. Never in a million years did he think he would be adding peeing on a hedge to that list.
Cain's Recovery Struggles
Cain is trying to return to normal life after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer. The operation left him with side effects, including a temporary catheter. He initially feared he would need it for life but was relieved to learn it was temporary. However, Cain sees his body's need for recovery as a weakness, shrouded in shame that his bodily functions are beyond his control.
Before the operation, his biggest fear was not being able to perform for his sex-hungry wife Moira (Natalie J Robb). He tried to end his marriage, and when that failed, he considered canceling the life-saving operation to preserve his sexual function. Now, his biggest fear is needing to urinate every five minutes for the rest of his life.
A Celebration Gone Wrong
Things look up when his catheter is removed, and he begins to believe life might return to normal. He heads to the Woolpack to celebrate and indulges in a pint. Despite Caleb Miligan (William Ash) advising him to take it easy, Cain necks a whiskey. As he stumbles home, his prostate issues catch him off guard, causing urgency to urinate. Thinking nothing of it, he urinates at the side of the road.
Bad timing strikes as police officers pass by. Cain is instantly arrested for public urination and drunk and disorderly conduct. He is dumped in a cell and left to rage as PC Swirling (Andy Moore) offers him sweatpants. Cain does not handle embarrassment well and is forced to stew overnight. Too ashamed to tell Moira what happened, it becomes another secret between them.
A New Anxiety
The experience leaves Cain with a new anxiety: being too far away from a toilet. Cain with anxiety is a whole new Cain. Will he confess his fears to Moira, or will this further drive a wedge between them?
