EastEnders is set to welcome back a familiar face as Ash Panesar returns to Albert Square after a three-year absence, with a new actress bringing a unique real-life background to the role. Sakira Vel, a fully trained former medical doctor who spent over a decade working for the NHS and in Australia, will take over the part from Gurlaine Kaur Garcha, who played the character from 2019 to 2023.
Ash Panesar, a young doctor, originally left the BBC soap three years ago to take a job in Canada, leaving behind her mother Suki Kaur Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) and Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry). Since her departure, Ash has been barely mentioned in the show, with her life across the Atlantic remaining largely a mystery to viewers and her family alike.
A Doctor Who Really Walks the Walk
Vel's background as a medical professional is set to add an extra layer of authenticity to her portrayal of Ash. With years of experience in both the NHS and Australian healthcare systems, she brings a genuine bedside manner to the role that viewers are sure to notice.
Speaking about her casting, Vel expressed her excitement: “When I got the call offering me the role, I don’t think I could truly believe it until I finally made it onto the Square. EastEnders is an absolute television icon, and the show was essentially the backdrop to my childhood.”
She added, “Taking on the role of Ash is a real honour, and I cannot wait for the audience to see what we have in store as she dives straight into the Panesar family chaos.”

The character's return comes after reports in January 2023 that she had been axed by then-executive producer Chris Clenshaw, although the door was left open for a future comeback. Now, with Vel at the helm, Ash Panesar is poised to make a dramatic and impactful return to Albert Square, promising viewers a blend of medical expertise and family drama that is sure to captivate audiences.
