Rare Cloud Jaguar Sighting in Honduras
A cloud jaguar has been captured on camera in the Sierra del Merendon mountains of Honduras, marking the first sighting in a decade. This event is significant as it represents the highest elevation at which a cloud jaguar has been documented in the country. The image provides rare evidence that jaguars are still using this high-elevation corridor between Honduras and Guatemala, suggesting that anti-poaching patrols, conservation investments, and prey reintroduction efforts are showing signs of success. This is particularly noteworthy given Honduras has one of the highest deforestation rates in Latin America.
Puffin Rescue and Release in Scotland
Two puffins, named Danny and Arnie, were rescued by the Scottish SPCA after washing up in Fife, UK, following a spell of bad weather. Upon arrival at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre, both birds were emaciated. During their care, they lost their waterproofing due to a lack of natural preening, a common issue for seabirds in rehabilitation. The team routinely washed and swam the puffins to assess their waterproofing. Once fully waterproof, the centre coordinated with an Isle of May boat tour company to release the pair halfway to the island, avoiding direct release to minimize predation risks. The dynamic duo were dropped from the boat onto the water and swam away successfully.

Chimpanzee Conflict in Uganda: The world's largest group of chimpanzees, around 500 animals in Kibale National Park, has split into two factions, leading to a civil war. Researchers observed this stable community fracture and descend into years of deadly violence, marking the first clearly documented example of such a split in wild chimpanzees.
Butterfly Decline in the UK: According to 50 years of data from the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, many butterfly species are disappearing due to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. The project has built over 44 million records since 1976, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.
Panamanian Golden Frog Conservation: At the Gamboa Amphibian Research and Conservation Center in Panama, efforts are underway to rewild the Panamanian golden frog, which has not been seen in the wild since 2009. The project involves breeding and releasing frogs to study rewilding science.
