Expanding the Herd: More Wild Cows Arrive in South London
In a significant step for urban rewilding, three additional Sussex cattle were introduced to Tolworth Court Farm Fields on April 2, 2026. This release marks the latest phase of the Wild Tolworth project, a collaborative effort between Citizen Zoo, The Community Brain, and Kingston Council. The new arrivals join three Sussex cows that were previously released in February by Deputy Mayor of London Mete Çoban, bringing the total herd to six animals.
A Haven for Biodiversity and Habitat Restoration
The project utilizes over 42 hectares of land, an area nearly twice the size of St James's Park, providing ample space for the cattle to roam freely. For the first time in five decades, these brown bovine creatures have been welcomed into the nature reserve with the goal of restoring the natural habitat for local residents to enjoy. The cows contribute to the ecosystem by trampling grass and grazing, activities that are expected to create a mosaic of habitats, increase plant and insect diversity, and help sequester carbon in the soil.
Safety measures are in place to ensure harmony between the herd and the public. The cows reside behind a secure fence and wear collars that emit sounds they are trained to respond to if they approach the boundary too closely. A dedicated group of volunteers, known as 'Wild Guardians', provides ongoing care and monitoring for the animals.
Future Plans and Ecological Enhancements
Later this year, the cows will share their environment with Oxford Sandy and Black pigs, a breed whose natural foraging behavior is anticipated to benefit local wildlife by digging up grubs and roots. There is also potential for introducing horses to the site in the future. The project has recently completed its wetland restoration phase, which involved planting approximately 4,200 plants, further enhancing the ecological value of this once-neglected nature area.
This initiative represents a pioneering effort in large-scale rewilding within an urban setting, showcasing how cities can integrate wildlife conservation into their landscapes. The Wild Tolworth project not only aims to improve biodiversity but also offers a unique opportunity for Londoners to witness rewilding in action, though sightings may be limited to those visiting the specific fields in Tolworth.
