Footage captured at Chester Zoo shows rare giant otter pups taking their first swimming lesson. The 15-week-old triplets were guided by their mother, Bonita, and father, Manu, in a heartwarming display of parental care.
Names Inspired by Nature
The two male pups, Uca and Yali, are named after a region in the Amazon rainforest and the second largest region in Peru, respectively. The female pup is called Yara, which means 'river spirit' in Brazilian folklore, reflecting the cultural significance of these animals.
Conservation Efforts
Giant otters are endangered, with conservationists estimating that only a few thousand remain across South America. The birth of these pups is part of an international conservation breeding programme in European zoos aimed at protecting the species from extinction.
Chester Zoo's commitment to safeguarding giant otters highlights the critical role zoos play in preserving biodiversity. The pups' development will be closely monitored as they grow and learn essential survival skills.
