Blind New Mexico Dog Hailed as 'Bear Slayer' After Protecting Family from Bear Attack
A partially blind, 12-year-old dog from New Mexico is being celebrated as a "bear slayer" after she courageously defended her family's property from a hungry ursine intruder. The dog, named Honey, sustained nearly fatal injuries during the confrontation but successfully protected dozens of chickens, two horses, and other dogs on the Martinez family's land in Cordova.
The Heroic Confrontation
According to owner Denise Martinez, security camera audio and animal tracks confirmed that Honey battled a bear in early March. The bear, apparently fresh from hibernation and searching for food, approached the property but was driven off by Honey's brave intervention. Remarkably, none of the more than 60 chickens or other animals were harmed during the incident.
Martinez described the terrifying sounds captured on audio as Honey fell into the bear's clutches during their struggle. The next morning, Martinez's daughter Leanna found Honey in the driveway with severe injuries including torn flesh, deep punctures, bruising, and massive swelling.
Severe Injuries and Recovery
"The bear just ripped off the skin of her neck from below the collar to right under her chin," Denise Martinez said of Honey's wounds. The dog, who had previously been partly blinded during an encounter with a porcupine, faced injuries that initially appeared insurmountable.
The Martinez family rushed Honey to the urgent care clinic operated by the non-profit Española Humane shelter. There, she underwent surgery and endured daily bandage changes while receiving multiple medications. Despite her injuries, Honey showed remarkable courage throughout her treatment, mirroring the bravery she displayed during the bear confrontation.
A Family's 'Little Savior'
"She is our little savior – she's always been protective that way," Denise Martinez said of Honey. "She risked her life to save not just the coop – but her family – from that bear."
The Española Humane shelter noted in a Facebook post that Honey's bravery earned her the "bear slayer" nickname from both the Martinez family and shelter staff. The shelter emphasized that Honey "stood between her family and danger, and chose them – over and over again, even when it could have cost her everything."
Remarkable Recovery and Return Home
By the time the shelter published its post about Honey's ordeal, the courageous dog had returned home to recover. She now rests comfortably among the horses, fellow dogs, and chickens whose eggs the Martinez family routinely shares with colleagues and friends.
Despite showing fear around vacuum cleaners, Honey demonstrated extraordinary valor when her family needed protection most. Her story highlights the deep loyalty dogs show toward their human families and the incredible resilience animals can display even in the face of life-threatening danger.
