UK Braces for Temperature Plunge After Record Spring Warmth
The United Kingdom is currently basking in unseasonably warm temperatures, with some areas experiencing highs of up to 26°C, marking the hottest spell of 2026 so far. However, this pleasant interlude will be short-lived, as forecasters predict a dramatic drop in temperatures by the end of the week.
Record-Breaking Warmth Across the Nation
Today, temperatures soared across the country, reaching 23°C in Bristol and an impressive 26°C in London. Met Office Chief Forecaster Paul Gundersen noted that these conditions are more typical of late spring or early summer. "This could be the warmest spell at this point in April since 2020," he stated. "However, this warmth will be short-lived, with a marked drop in temperatures and more unsettled conditions developing later this week."
Sharp Decline Expected by Friday
Between Wednesday and Thursday, daytime temperatures are forecast to fall by up to 10°C in some regions. While East Anglia and the southeast may retain milder conditions initially, colder air will gradually move in, bringing back winds and showers. The Met Office warns that Thursday night will feel notably colder than recent nights, with a risk of frost in certain areas.
By the weekend, temperatures are expected to return to average levels for this time of year, accompanied by a mix of sunshine and rain. The shift is attributed to changing wind patterns. "For the next couple of days, we're dragging in that warm, southerly wind, which allows temperatures to reach the mid-20s," explained the Met Office. "As we go into Thursday, temperatures will return to normal as the weather turns more changeable with advances of rain and showers."
Welcome Respite from Recent Storms
This warm spell provides a brief respite from the blustery conditions that affected much of the UK last week. Storm Dave recently impacted the British Isles, bringing dangerous winds that disrupted travel and infrastructure. At Dublin Airport, pilots navigated gusts of up to 65mph, leading to the cancellation of at least 25 flights due to challenging wind conditions. National Highways also issued warnings about road closures as strong winds swept across carriageways.
As the UK enjoys this temporary warmth, residents are advised to prepare for the impending cooler weather and unsettled conditions. The Met Office emphasizes that while this spring heatwave is notable, it is merely a fleeting break before more typical April weather returns.
