Indian photographer Harivansh Verma captured a poignant moment during the Ganga Dussehra festival in Haridwar, where a street vendor's exhausted expression contrasts sharply with the cheerful balloons he carries. The image, titled "The Weight of Joy" and shot on a Realme 14 Pro in 2026, has been highlighted as Verma's best phone picture.
The photograph was taken on the evening of Ganga Dussehra, a major Hindu celebration held along the banks of the Ganges River. Verma was at Har Ki Pauri ghat, a holy riverbank in the city of Haridwar, a location steeped in personal significance for him.
A sacred day and a chance encounter
"Haridwar holds a lot of deeply spiritual memories for me and my family," Verma explains. "In Hinduism we believe taking a dip in the Ganges cleanses you of your sins. Devotees travel from across the country and the ritual baths go on continuously from sunrise until late into the night. The atmosphere is magnificent."
It was early evening when Verma took a stroll along the shore, looking for moments to capture with his smartphone. "When I came across this young man, the balloons made me smile at first, but his expression is what made me stop," he recalls.
Two stories in one frame
Verma did not know the man, and they exchanged few words, aside from asking permission to take the shot. "There was nothing out of the ordinary about him, but his expression clearly reflected the heavy weight of worry and responsibility he was carrying," Verma says. "The contrast between the exhausted look on his face and the cheerful smiley faces on the balloons felt like two completely different stories existing in one frame."
The photographer hopes viewers will share a similar experience when looking at the image. "Maybe they'll smile at first, but then spend a little longer looking at him and wondering about his story," Verma adds.
A lasting impression
The photograph serves as a reminder of the everyday struggles that often go unnoticed during festive occasions. By capturing this fleeting moment, Verma has created an image that invites contemplation, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface and consider the lives of those who work to make such celebrations possible.
