UK Heatwave Continues: How Long Will It Last?

The United Kingdom is enjoying the second day of a bank holiday weekend heatwave, with temperatures already topping 30°C in some areas. After a week of chilly rain, the weather has made a dramatic U-turn, bringing scorching sunshine that is expected to persist for several days.

How long will the heatwave last?

The first heatwave of 2026 is set to last at least until Wednesday, according to the Met Office. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber heat alert, active until Wednesday afternoon, warning that exposure to heat could be life-threatening for vulnerable individuals and may put pressure on hospitals and clinics.

On Saturday, parts of the UK will be hotter than the Seychelles, with temperatures reaching 31°C across the South East and London. The balmy weather is expected to continue through bank holiday Monday, with London potentially hitting 33°C on Monday and 34°C on Tuesday.

Regional forecasts

Greg Dewhurst, senior operational meteorologist at the Met Office, stated: ‘High pressure will dominate through the whole of the Bank Holiday weekend. Plenty of very warm sunshine across England and Wales each day. Scotland and Northern Ireland will see more cloud at times, with a few showers across north-west Scotland.’

Friday saw London Heathrow Airport record 28.4°C, with similar temperatures in Cambridge and Cranwell, Lincolnshire. The clear skies bring high UV levels, with London, Cardiff, and Manchester expecting a UV index of 7, indicating moderate risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure.

How to stay cool in the heatwave

For those able to enjoy the weekend by a shaded lake, the conditions are ideal. However, for those in London or traveling by road or rail, staying cool is a challenge. Doctors recommend drinking plenty of water, and one surprising everyday drink can help. On the Tube, look for air-conditioned lines and carry water. Essential heatwave survival items include handheld fans and cooling pillows.

Tropical nights, where temperatures do not fall below 20°C, are expected in southern England and London on Sunday and Monday nights, making for uncomfortable sleeping conditions.

The Met Office advises regular application of suncream to protect against high UV rays. With the heatwave set to continue, residents and visitors are urged to take precautions to stay safe and cool.
