Happy Valley, a nature reserve in Old Coulsdon near Croydon, spans more than 252 acres of ancient woodland and open meadows, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to spot roe deer roaming freely within easy reach of central London. The park, which sits alongside neighbouring Farthing Downs, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with sightings of badgers, foxes, stoats, weasels, and the nationally rare dormouse also possible.

The reserve's ancient woodland contains a diverse mix of trees, including oak, beech, ash, cherry, sweet chestnut, field maple, and hazel. During the autumn months, the foliage becomes particularly vivid, making it a spectacular destination for walkers looking to enjoy the seasonal colours.
Happy Valley is part of the Farthing Downs and Happy Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and holds a Green Flag Award, recognising its high environmental standards. The site is also designated as a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature (SMNI), underscoring its significance for biodiversity in the capital.
Family-Friendly Features and Local Amenities
For families, the park offers well-suited nature trails and easy woodland walks. An audio trail is available in four languages—English, French, Hindi, and Polish—allowing visitors to explore the reserve at their own pace while learning about its ecosystem.
After a walk, the nearby pub The Fox, located in Coulsdon Common, provides a place to rest with a log fire and Sunday roasts that visitors describe as 'perfect'. The pub is easily reachable from the valley.
Potential AONB Designation and Access
Natural England included Happy Valley and Farthing Downs in an order earlier this year that would designate them as part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). If the proposals are accepted, the parks would receive enhanced legal protection and access to official AONB resources.
To reach Happy Valley from Croydon, a straightforward 30-minute drive is required. For public transport from Central London, visitors can take a Thameslink train from London Bridge to Purley, followed by the 466 bus to Coulsdon Common/The Fox.
