Storm Dave to Unleash 90mph Winds Across the UK Within Hours

Hold on to your hats – Storm Dave is hitting the UK today, bringing destructive 90mph winds that threaten widespread disruption. The Met Office has issued four yellow weather warnings, which will come into force this afternoon, alerting residents to prepare for severe conditions.

Weather Warnings and Affected Areas

An alert for wind, covering the north of England and parts of Wales, will be active from 5pm today until 7am on Sunday. The whole of mainland Scotland also has a yellow warning for wind from 6pm today until midday tomorrow, with the Highlands additionally facing heavy rain and snow starting at 3pm. A separate warning for wind across Northern Ireland will be in effect from 2pm until 3am, highlighting the broad impact of this storm system.

Dangerous Coastal Conditions Expected

Those living along the coastline have been warned of dangerous conditions, with large waves expected to pound the shore. Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree emphasized the severity, stating, "Storm Dave will form and rapidly deepen on Saturday as it approaches the UK from the west. By Saturday afternoon, winds will strengthen significantly, with gusts of 60-70mph expected at times across parts of Scotland, and the potential for gusts of 80-90mph in exposed coastal locations. Gusts of 50-60mph are likely more widely in northern Britain."

Snow and Blizzard Threats in Scotland

As well as strong winds, Storm Dave will bring heavy snowfall over the hills in northern Scotland, where up to 10-20cm of snow could accumulate. Combined with the fierce winds, this will lead to blizzard conditions, posing significant travel hazards. Elsewhere, heavy spells of rain are forecast as the system moves eastwards across the UK.

Public Advisory and Preparedness

With Storm Dave imminent, authorities urge people to secure their property against the strong winds and stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, as warnings may be adjusted. The Met Office has named the storm to raise awareness, tweeting, "#StormDave has been named and is forecast to bring damaging winds across northern parts of the UK, with some disruptive snow possible in northwest Scotland later on Saturday and into Easter Day #WeatherAware." Residents are advised to pack essentials and prepare for potential power outages and travel delays.
