Glasgow H&M Evacuated After Electrical Fire Causes Explosions
Glasgow H&M evacuated after electrical fire explosions

A significant fire at an electrical substation triggered loud explosions and led to the evacuation of a popular H&M store in the heart of Glasgow on Saturday afternoon.

Scene of the Incident

The incident unfolded around 4:30 pm on Saturday, 15 November 2025, on West Nile Street in Glasgow city centre. Witnesses reported hearing loud banging noises, which some described as similar to fireworks, accompanied by flashes from a building shutter.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were alerted at 4:31 pm to a blaze at a six-storey commercial building. A total of seven fire appliances, including a high-reach vehicle, were dispatched to tackle the flames, which are believed to have originated from an electrical sub-station.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

Firefighters and Police Scotland officers swiftly established a cordon, closing West Nile Street between Renfield Street and Bath Street. As a precautionary measure, the nearby H&M store on Buchanan Street was evacuated.

One resident on West Nile Street recounted the alarming scene, stating, "It sounded almost like fireworks. The fire brigade came into my building and asked us to evacuate. Luckily they came on time. It’s a bit concerning."

Aftermath and Ongoing Operations

Authorities have confirmed that there were no reports of any injuries following a full evacuation of the affected building. The fire was successfully brought under control, but crews remained at the scene to monitor the situation.

Members of the public were urged to avoid the area, and nearby residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed to prevent smoke inhalation. Motorists were also told to seek alternative routes.
