Deptford waste fire: black smoke seen across London

A massive fire has broken out at a waste facility in Deptford, southeast London, sending thick black smoke across the capital. The blaze involves around 50 tonnes of household waste stored at the site, according to the London Fire Brigade.

The alarm was raised at 7.59pm, with fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters dispatched to the scene. Crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford and surrounding fire stations have been sent to tackle the blaze.

Residents advised to keep windows closed

Local residents have been told to keep doors and windows closed as thick smoke billows out of the area. The plumes have been spotted across London, as far as Bethnal Green and Thamesmead, with passers-by in Canary Wharf, London Bridge and New Cross also posting videos and pictures of the blaze online.

The fire, near a railway, has disrupted Southeastern train services, the company said on X. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Fire crews from across London respond

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are currently at the scene, working to bring the blaze under control. The fire has generated a large column of black smoke, visible from several miles away.

London Fire Brigade has not yet confirmed when the fire is expected to be extinguished, but crews remain on site.

The incident has caused significant disruption in the area, with local roads closed and train services affected. Southeastern has advised passengers to check their journeys before travelling.
