BBC Weather: Days of rain, thunder and lightning in London

BBC Weather is forecasting several days of heavy rain, thunder and lightning for London as the capital moves out of heatwave territory. The unsettled conditions are expected to begin on Friday, August 28, with thundery showers predicted during the morning rush hour, which may prompt commuters to avoid travelling to the office.

Thundery showers and bank holiday washout

Further thunder and lightning is forecast to hit the capital again at 7pm on Friday, before being replaced by intermittent rain and sunshine on Saturday. According to the latest BBC Weather forecast, the remainder of the bank holiday weekend is likely to be a washout, with heavy rain expected across Sunday and Monday.

Revellers heading to Notting Hill Carnival are likely to experience heavy rain on Sunday, with grey clouds and thundery showers taking hold late into the night. Monday will see further bursts of thunder and lightning in the morning and into the early evening.

Temperatures remain warm despite wet weather

Despite the rain, temperatures will remain warm, with thermometers next week expected to hover at an average high of 23C. The capital is definitely out of heatwave territory for now, but the Met Office has refused to rule out the possibility that the mercury will rise again.

The Met Office's long-range outlook says temperatures are expected to be above average for the month, with a higher chance of hot spells in the south of England. It currently reads: "Further into September, drier weather may become more prevalent, especially in the south and southeast, with any more unsettled conditions tending to become confined further north and northwest. Temperatures will probably be near normal at first, but may turn warmer later with a chance of some hot periods in the south."

Flooding risk as autumn approaches
