Denise Fox (Diane Parish) has been dealt a devastating double blow in EastEnders. First, her close friend and fellow cancer patient Teyana (Denise Pitter) died overnight from an infection after developing a high temperature. Then, Denise discovered that her daughter Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) has secretly allowed Sheila Atkins (Sheila Ruskin) — the grandmother of Chelsea's abusive ex and serial killer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) — to visit Denise's grandson Jordan Fox (Izaiah Hagan-Brown).
Denise's cancer battle takes a turn
Denise was recently discharged from hospital after being told her acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is not responding to treatment. She chose to hide this devastating news from her family, including daughters Chelsea and Libby Fox (Belinda Owusu), partner Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), half-sister Kim Fox (Tameka Empson), and best friend Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter). Instead, she found solace in her friendship with Teyana, whom she met on the ward.
In a heartfelt voice note, Teyana had said: "Morning friend. How are we? You got that dog-tired can't sleep feeling? Me too. I'm missing you. It's funny, that. It's not like we could hang out is it? But still. Knowing that you were two doors down made me feel like we were cheers-ing over the devil juice!"
Family secrets and tensions
Meanwhile, Chelsea has been struggling since Jordan ran in front of a car driven by Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), leaving the boy with potentially life-changing injuries. Chelsea accepted help from Sheila Atkins, Gray's grandmother, but has kept this from Denise. Libby advised Chelsea not to tell Denise, fearing it would stress her. However, Denise noticed Kim moving her wedding date earlier — presumably in case Denise doesn't survive — and later spotted Chelsea and Jordan with Sheila from her window.
When Denise confronted Libby, who sheepishly revealed the woman was Jordan's great-grandmother, Denise exploded: "What?! You mean Gray's Gran?!"
Ravi offers comfort
Earlier, Denise had a touching conversation with Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara), who was horrified to learn of her cancer. Denise described her feelings: "Feels like I've been put back in my life, and it's almost the same but everything's a little bit off. Feels like that film, the Truman Show. The worst part is I thought going away, when I came back, everything would have fallen apart, but everyone's been tickety-boo without me."
Ravi, who has faced his own mental health struggles, related to her feelings. Their talk was cut short when Jack arrived, worried about Denise being out alone.
Teyana's death and Denise's grief
Denise went to the hospital to bring Teyana some balm, only to learn from a porter that Teyana had developed an infection and died overnight. Denise went into denial, unable to believe her friend was gone. Later, alone in her room, she listened to Teyana's final voice note: "Truth is…I'm feeling rough Dee. This round is hell. It's worse than hell. We put on a face, don't we? We try to be strong. Sometimes… sometimes I just want to give up."
The episode ends with Denise looking out her window and seeing Chelsea and Jordan with Sheila, leading to the explosive confrontation.
