The 1% Club Kids Special: Tricky Maths Question Stumps Adult Viewers
1% Club Kids Special: Maths Question Stumps Adults

The 1% Club has become a television phenomenon since its debut in 2022, captivating audiences with mind-bending puzzles that only the most lateral thinkers can solve. The show, which features contestants from all walks of life, recently gave younger participants a chance to shine in a special kids' edition.

The 1% Club Kids Special

Hosted by Lee Mack, the special episode aired late last month and featured 100 contestants aged between nine and 15. They tackled tricky teasers for a chance to win a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. However, just because the questions were aimed at a younger audience did not make them any easier for viewers at home.

The 25% Question

One question from the 25% stage of the game, with 26 contestants remaining, left many adults scratching their heads. It read: “On Hannah’s 6th birthday, she went to a theme park. She really wanted to ride this rollercoaster but she was only one metre tall. Every year, Hannah gets five centimetres taller. How old will she be when she becomes able to ride the rollercoaster?” The accompanying sign stated: “To ride, you must be at least 140cm tall or 12 years old.”

Lee Mack joked, “This is just like being back at school, isn’t it? Only with a really cool supply teacher.” The question eliminated five contestants, surprising many viewers.

The Solution

While the answer seemed straightforward—Hannah would be 12 years old, the minimum age allowed—the puzzle required some maths. Hannah grows five centimetres each year, meaning she would reach 140cm at age 14. However, the sign also allowed riding at age 12 regardless of height. Lee Mack explained, “On her 12th birthday, she’ll be able to ride the rollercoaster despite only being 130cm tall.”

Contestant Matilda later revealed her strategy: “I looked at the question while you were reading it and I didn’t work it out so I just put 12.” A lucky guess that proved correct.

Viewer Reactions

Many adult viewers admitted to being stumped. One confessed on X: “I’m out… because I didn’t read the sign properly.” Another added: “Fantastic series and I’ve voted for the NTAs but still didn’t get the 1% question right.”

Finale and Future Episodes

Five contestants—Immie, Ellie, Finley, Alayna, and Olly—made it to the 1% question. Ellie and Finley became proud members of the 1% Club, winning trips to Walt Disney World. While new episodes are pending, the show continues to attract viewers with weekend repeats.

One recent re-run featured contestants Christopher and Scott attempting to win a share of £95,000 by solving a triangle puzzle: “How many triangles are there in this picture?” The correct answer was 18, but Christopher guessed eight and Scott answered 19, just missing the mark.

The 1% Club proves that even the most logical brains can be challenged, especially under the 30-second time limit.
