A devastating fire at a girls' boarding school in central Kenya has claimed the lives of at least 15 students, with several others injured. The blaze broke out early Wednesday morning at Utumishi Girls School, located in Gilgil, Nakuru County, approximately 80 miles west of Nairobi. The fire started in the accommodation section of the school, and authorities have not yet determined the cause.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Police commander Masoud Mwinyi confirmed that search teams have been deployed to account for all students, while the Kenyan Red Cross is providing on-ground assistance. Speaking to local media, Mwinyi described the situation as 'sad and saddening.' Several students have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries. The school premises have been cordoned off as investigations continue.
Context of School Fires in Kenya
School fires are a recurring issue in Kenyan boarding schools. They are often attributed to arson or electrical faults. In 2023, a similar tragedy occurred in Guyana, where a dormitory fire killed 19 children. The frequency of such incidents has raised concerns about safety standards in educational institutions across the region.
Authorities urge the public to remain calm as rescue and investigation efforts proceed. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
