In the latest instalment of The Guardian's long-running Blind Date column, two strangers from London met for dinner and drinks, offering a candid glimpse into the modern world of arranged encounters. Aaron, a 28-year-old digital producer, was paired with Tara, a 30-year-old marketing professional, for a meal at the Mexican-Japanese restaurant Los Mochis in London EC2.
The Date Unfolds: Tacos, Taskmaster and Tall Tales
Both daters arrived simultaneously, which Aaron felt helped dispel initial nerves. He was immediately struck by Tara's great smile and sharp dress sense, though he confessed to feeling underdressed himself. Conversation flowed easily, covering topics from work and family to their shared pride in being from south London, which Aaron dubbed "the capital of the world."
Tara enjoyed Aaron's stories about his "cool job" designing activities for after-school clubs, while they also bonded over discussions about the TV show Taskmaster and the impressive stature of its host, Greg Davies. The only awkward moment, according to Tara, was when restaurant staff surprised them with a flash photograph under a Christmas tree.
The Verdict: A Friendly Encounter Without Romantic Fireworks
When it came to rating the evening, their perspectives diverged. Tara awarded the date a solid 8 out of 10, stating she had a "great time" and would love to attend one of Aaron's gigs. She described him as creative, warm, and curious, and said she would happily introduce him to her friends.
Aaron, however, was more measured. While he called Tara a "10/10 person," bubbly, smiley, and warm, he rated the date itself a 6 out of 10. He sensed a lack of romantic spark and wasn't sure their social worlds would mesh, though he appreciated her adventurous spirit and interesting life stories.
The Morning After: Hugs, Not Kisses
The evening concluded without a nightcap, both feeling full from the tasting menu—Aaron regretted not having a smaller lunch. When asked about a parting kiss, both were firmly on the same page. "No, just a hug," said Aaron. Tara's response was more emphatic: "Kiss? It's flu season!" She did, however, note that he thoughtfully texted to check she got home safely.
