At least 27 people were killed and dozens injured in what Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, called the worst Russian attack on the capital during more than four years of air assault on Ukraine. Russia used nearly 500 drones and more than 70 missiles in the hours-long attack on Kyiv and other parts of the country in the early hours of Thursday, causing large fires across the city and damaging residential buildings in several districts.

Survivors search through rubble

Iryna Plekhova, a resident who survived the missile and drone attack, searched for her remaining personal belongings in her burned-out apartment. As dawn broke, fires were still burning across Kyiv, with strikes or debris hitting residential buildings and a hotel on one of the central boulevards. Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned: 'I am asking all our people to be extra careful, take care of yourselves and your children, and use shelters, this is very important.'

Venezuela earthquake devastation

In Venezuela, more than 58,000 buildings may have been damaged or destroyed by twin earthquakes, according to a preliminary analysis of satellite data. The official death toll stands at 2,595, but with 400 bodies reportedly being delivered to La Guaira's morgue each day, that figure is certain to rise. Rescue workers in Catia La Mar pulled a 43-year-old security guard from the collapsed basement of a shopping centre eight days after the earthquakes, amid cheers from international teams.

Heatwave scorches Europe

Extreme heat across Europe saw more than two-thirds of Europeans experience temperatures above 35°C during the June heatwave. All-time records were broken in Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Czechia and Hungary, while June records fell in the UK and Switzerland. France's average temperature also hit an absolute high. In Berlin, police used water cannons on tourists at the Brandenburg Gate.

World Cup and Wimbledon

England's Harry Kane scored two late goals to secure a win against Democratic Republic of Congo at the World Cup in Atlanta. Manager Thomas Tuchel's mission to add a second World Cup star to the England shirt looked in doubt until Kane's rescue. At Wimbledon, Amanda Anisimova fired 20 aces past Sofia Kenin to reach the third round, erasing some memory of last year's final loss.

Other global events

In South Africa, mass anti-immigration protests took place after a weeks-long campaign against foreigners that has seen at least four killed and tens of thousands fleeing. In Monaco, an international search is under way for a suspected bomber after a parcel bomb wounded Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Iermolaiev and two others. In Beijing, people photographed a large flag of the Communist Party of China on its 105th anniversary. Donald Trump visited North Dakota for the dedication of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, with YMCA playing in the background.
