Sony's June State of Play to Open with Wolverine Game in 60-Minute Showcase
Sony's June State of Play to Open with Wolverine Game

Sony's next State of Play promises to be a stacked one and will open up with new details for this year's Wolverine video game. Summertime is fast approaching, which means Summer Game Fest and a whole host of major new video game reveals are almost upon us. Microsoft already announced a date for its Xbox summer showcase a couple of months ago, scheduling it for June 7. Nintendo is rumoured to finally be holding a general Nintendo Direct around mid-June, which tracks with previous years, whereas there has been speculation of Sony's summer State of Play showcase airing before the end of May. Turns out that is not the case, but Sony has officially confirmed that it is happening very soon, right before Summer Game Fest, and it is a big one at 60 minutes long.

When is Sony's Summer State of Play Airing?

Per an announcement on the PlayStation Blog, the next State of Play airs on Tuesday, June 2, in just a couple of weeks' time. As usual, though, it will be airing late at night, specifically at 10pm BST.

Unsurprisingly, a closer look at Insomniac's Wolverine game is promised for the event, since that is the next big PlayStation 5 exclusive launching this year on September 15. Sony makes it clear, though, this will not be the only game at the State of Play. In fact, Wolverine will serve as the opening act, followed by updates, announcements, and gameplay reveals from top studios around the world.

What Else Could Be Shown?

This naturally begs the question of what the State of Play could end with. Sony does have some big projects brewing in the background, such as Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. That game has not received an update since the 2024 reveal and is heavily rumoured to not be launching this year. So, perhaps Sony is hoping to have it out in 2027.

It is far too early to show anything of the God of War remakes since those were only announced in February, though there are rumours of series developer Santa Monica working on a spin-off starring Faye, Kratos' second wife and mother of Atreus. Said spin-off was also rumoured to be announced this year, and this State of Play would be the perfect place for it.

Speaking of rumours, there was recent chatter of Sony revisiting older franchises such as Ape Escape and inFamous, so perhaps at least one such revival will make an appearance. There will assuredly be a new trailer for fighting game Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls as well, since that is launching this August and has yet to share its full character roster.
