Nintendo Outshines PlayStation as Industry Leader This Week
Nintendo Outshines PlayStation as Industry Leader

Nintendo's two Direct presentations this week have reinforced its position as a superior industry leader compared to PlayStation, according to a reader's feature published by GameCentral. The reader, identified as Glottis, argues that despite Nintendo's puzzling prioritization of lesser-known franchises, the company's output and strategy outshine Sony's current approach, which he describes as releasing as few games as possible.

Nintendo's Priorities Questioned

Glottis, who owns only a Switch 2 among current-gen consoles, acknowledges that Nintendo's biggest issue is its priorities. He notes that the company seems to be fast-tracking obscure B and C-list franchises, with a second Kirby game and second Metroid title arriving within two years, while no new Mario platformer (2D or 3D), Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros., or Splatoon 4 has been announced. He specifically criticizes the lack of a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 Edition in the early months of the console's life, suggesting it would be easy to add extra characters to sweeten the deal.

Ocarina of Time Remake Impresses

Despite these concerns, Glottis expresses general satisfaction with the Switch 2 and was happy with the Direct on Wednesday. The major announcement came the day before: a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which he calls 'the best video game ever made.' He admits to initial conflict over the reveal, particularly the overdesigned look of Young Link, which he compares to a marzipan figurine from a wedding cake. However, he believes the backgrounds look fantastic and that the criticism stems more from the choice of footage shown—focusing on Young Link sections with cheesy voiceovers—rather than the remake itself.

Glottis defends Nintendo's decision to lead with a remake for its big Christmas game, arguing that it has been over a decade since a new Zelda using the original formula, and players are ready for nostalgia before the next mainline title.

Nintendo vs. Sony: A Clear Winner

Comparing Nintendo to PlayStation and Xbox, Glottis notes that Nintendo is committed to single-player games, produces high-quality titles, and prices them reasonably—Ocarina of Time is cheaper than Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. He concludes that Nintendo is a much better industry leader than Sony, which he accuses of trolling fans since Xbox ceased to be a rival. He states he is happy with his Switch 2 and would choose a PC over a PlayStation if he ever got another system.
