Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed: Apple TV Thriller That Will Leave You Stunned
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed: A Stunning Apple TV Thriller

Are you tired of predictable TV thrillers that follow the same old formula? Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed on Apple TV is a spectacular watch that defies expectations. Starring the immensely talented Tatiana Maslany, this series delivers a gripping plot, stellar performances, and twists that will leave you astonished.

A Thriller That Keeps You Guessing

I had a feeling that Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed would be right up my street. It looked like a fun watch with a gripping plot and a stellar cast. Why wouldn’t I enjoy it? But I didn’t expect the new Apple TV thriller to leave my jaw on the floor, salivating over each episode, and staggered by twists that truly left me astonished. I love trying to guess how a plot will unfold, but I love it even more when the story takes me by surprise.

One of the first things you need to know about this series – led by Orphan Black and She-Hulk powerhouse Tatiana Maslany – is that the official synopsis and the trailer only touch the surface of what it’s really about. The blurb from Apple TV reads as follows: ‘A newly divorced mom falls down a dangerous rabbit hole of blackmail, murder, and youth soccer.’ I’ve seen all 10 episodes, and the complexities and horrors of this dark comedy go way deeper than that. Strap yourselves in.

The Plot: More Than Meets the Eye

As outlined by the streaming giant, Tatiana stars as Paula, a woman with a young daughter who’s recently divorced from her ex-husband, Karl (played by New Girl and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse star Jake Johnson). In her spare time, Paula regularly chats to a ‘camboy’ called Trevor (13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn), whom she pays for his time. Paula willingly opens up about her life to Trevor – perhaps too much, given he’s a stranger on the internet – and they also have cybersex over their webcams.

During one of their sessions, Paula is left shellshocked when she witnesses Trevor being attacked. He winds up bloody from the injuries, and the video ends abruptly. In a turn of events that feels refreshing for a fictional thriller – when you might expect the lead character to do some digging on their own, determined to solve the case solo, before finally asking for help – Paula rushes straight to the police to report the supposed crime. She’s told by Detective Sofia Gonzalez (Dolly de Leon) that this is likely a scam and that if she receives a call from Trevor asking for money to help him after he’s been kidnapped, then she should ignore it.

Sure enough, Paula receives a call, with a desperate Trevor begging for her help, desperate for this woman with whom he’s forged a virtual relationship to save him from a tight bind. So far, the situation is panning out exactly as Detective Gonzalez believed it would. But this is only the start for Paula. She has no idea that she’s now become a part of a far bigger conspiracy. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s also having to deal with her ex Karl and his new wife Mallory (Jessy Hodges), battling to make sure she can still have shared custody of her daughter Hazel (Noah Wallace). Because, of course, becoming entangled in a web of extortion and murder wasn’t stressful enough.

Tatiana Maslany: A Captivating Lead

The first thing that drew me to Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed was the fact that Tatiana plays the lead. I think the first thing I ever watched her in was Woman in Gold, before I finally checked out Orphan Black to find out what the fuss was all about. It turned out that the sci-fi thriller was just as brilliant as everyone had been saying, thanks largely to the Canadian actress’s magnificent performance – or should I say, performances, given she played 17 clones in the show. Fans of hers felt the same way when they saw the trailer for her latest show.

‘Tatiana Maslany? Count me in!’ NightFlash28 commented on YouTube. ‘Tatiana can do NO wrong. So pumped for this!!’ AmandaJMason4388 added. ‘You had me at Tatiana!’ AnthonyHortin remarked. Another fan, called Wolfborn8, put it simply: ‘I see Tatiana, I watch.’

What makes the 40-year-old so captivating to watch in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed isn’t just that she acts her socks off. She feels like a woman you might know in real life, or perhaps one viewers can see themselves in. She’s witty, can become obsessive, is brilliant at her job, cares deeply about her daughter, is sometimes scatty, and has to stay cool while dealing with snarky comments from her ex’s new partner. Her survival mode snaps into gear when she’s in absurd but life-threatening situations. She is not a woman to be underestimated, despite how she’s treated daily.

Verdict on Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed

It’s been a while since I’ve been this gripped by a TV thriller. My heart was racing, and the drama will still manage to make its audience laugh, too. Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is a triumph. You’re going to have to exercise your patience, given that only the first two episodes are out on launch day, followed by a weekly release. The wait might be agonising, but it’ll make the journey so much more satisfying.
