Keira Knightley West End Return The Lives of Others

Keira Knightley is set to make her long-awaited return to the West End stage in a stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning German film The Lives of Others. The production, which marks her first West End appearance in 15 years, will open at the Adelphi Theatre in London this autumn.

Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

Adapted and directed by Robert Icke, with music by acclaimed composer Max Richter, the play features a stellar cast. Knightley will portray an actress living in East Germany in 1984, who, along with her novelist partner played by Bridgerton star Luke Thompson, is placed under state surveillance. Stephen Dillane takes on the role of the Stasi captain responsible for monitoring their relationship.

A Thrilling and Unexpected Take

Producer Sonia Friedman, who has enjoyed a successful creative partnership with Icke on productions such as Oedipus, described the adaptation as an “unexpected” and “thrilling” interpretation of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s 2006 film. She praised Icke’s “rare ability to combine huge ideas with real emotional truth.”

Friedman elaborated on the play's themes, stating that The Lives of Others unfolds in a time and place “where nothing is private, every word carries consequence, and the state holds power not just over lives, but over thought, speech and imagination itself.” She emphasized that the production serves as “a reminder of how fragile those freedoms are, and of the cost and courage required to hold on to them.”

Connections to Icke's Previous Work

The play revisits themes explored in Icke and Duncan Macmillan’s stage adaptation of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, which premiered at the Almeida Theatre in 2014. Since then, Icke has solidified his reputation as one of British theatre’s most innovative directors, with recent works including a version of Romeo and Juliet that reimagines alternative outcomes for key scenes.

Production Details

The Lives of Others will be designed by Hildegard Bechtler and will run at the Adelphi Theatre from 14 October to 9 January. The venue previously housed Back to the Future: The Musical, which concluded its run earlier this month and is set to embark on a UK tour in October.

Knightley's Recent and Upcoming Projects

In addition to her stage return, Knightley has been busy with other ventures. Last year, she wrote and illustrated a children’s book, and she is set to voice Dolores Umbridge in a new series of Harry Potter audiobooks. Her previous West End credits include starring alongside Damian Lewis in Martin Crimp’s updated version of Molière’s The Misanthrope in 2009, and later with Elisabeth Moss in Lillian Hellman’s The Children’s Hour in 2011. She made her Broadway debut in 2015 in the title role of Thérèse Raquin, adapted from Émile Zola’s novel.
