The episode, which aired on August 9, 2026, delivered the long-awaited second Battle of Tumbleton, where Daemon Targaryen, joined by Riverlanders and Northmen, launched an assault on the market town. The clash resulted in significant casualties, including the deaths of Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton) and Queen Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban).
Fan Reactions: Praise and Criticism
Reactions to the finale have been sharply divided. On X (formerly Twitter), user @ASOIAFQuotesGOT praised the episode, saying it "successfully captures that Game of Thrones magic of old." Another user, Tarun Raju, noted that it featured "a lot of expectation-subversion for book-readers," drawing comparisons to the original series.
However, some fans were less impressed. A Reddit user, Mdrgm, called it "a terrible finale for an already weak season," adding: "There was nothing unexpected, nothing shocking, and not even a genuine surprise."
The scene that sparked the most debate was the moment Rhaenyra and Alicent realize Helaena has died by suicide, following her deep depression over being separated from her surviving child, Jaehaera, in King's Landing. Zaid on X declared this "the greatest scene in the history of House of the Dragon." But George Holdcroft disagreed, arguing that "the scene right before this with Roderick Dustin and Ormund Hightower in battle was even better."
Critical Response: A Disappointing Finale?
Metro's TV editor, Sabrina Barr, who was granted early access to the finale, gave it three stars. In her review, she expressed frustration: "As I watched the House of the Dragon season three finale, it made me realise something about the show that I didn’t want to admit, but couldn’t deny: I don’t have anyone to root for anymore."
Barr elaborated: "I need characters to champion, to see the good in them and feel they deserve the power they’re fighting for. The events of the season three finale cemented the fact that to me, none of them feel worthy to sit on the Iron Throne. It’s an exasperating and sad thought." She concluded that the episode might have worked better as a mid-season installment: "As an episode in the middle of the season, this could have worked. As a season finale, especially after everything we’ve been given this season, it was terrible."
In response to the criticism, another user, SpittinMenace, offered a more balanced view: "I didn’t like what they did with a few storylines and characters but it definitely had a stronger ending than season two."
