Emotional scenes are set to unfold in Hollyoaks next week as the village unites in grief following the devastating death of Diane Hutchinson, played by Alex Fletcher. The beloved matriarch, who ran The Dog in The Pond with her husband Tony (Nick Pickard), passed away after a battle with ovarian cancer. Diagnosed just months ago, Diane believed she had more time but learned she had only weeks left, resolving to make the most of every moment with her cherished husband and children.
Diane's Final Moments
In moving scenes, Diane enjoyed a dance with her soulmate Tony at Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) and Rex Gallagher's (Jonny Labey) wedding. Afterwards, she headed upstairs to the flat she called home for years, where she peacefully passed away while listening to Tony sing their little girl Eva to sleep. Tony discovered Diane and, breaking down, said his goodbyes, holding her tightly for one last time.
Tony's Struggle
A new clip from Monday's (May 18) episode shows a devastated Tony attempting to process the loss of his true love. After a stroll through the village, he is summoned to the Hutch by an unsuspecting Ste, who asks for help fixing the oven. As Tony examines it, Ste receives a text from Leela Dexter (Kirsty-Leigh Porter) informing him of Diane's death.
Leela becomes a pillar of support for the Hutchinson clan, especially for Ant (Brook Debio), Dee Dee (Chloe Atkinson), and Ro (Leo Cole), as Tony struggles with a world without his beloved Di. Ste and Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) offer words of encouragement, leading Tony back to his children. There is also a touching moment between Darren and his estranged sister Beth Keane (Rebecca Ryan), who offers advice on supporting Tony, having recently dealt with grief herself.
Cast and Crew Reactions
Discussing her departure, Alex Fletcher told Metro: 'I think over the last 16 years, I've been so lucky. I've been at the forefront of so many stories. I genuinely thought: "What else can I bring to it? I feel like I've done everything!" I wanted to go when I was still enjoying it.' She added: 'It took me about six months to make the decision. But you know when you've done your time. I just had that gut feeling.'
Fletcher admitted it was a tough decision, especially telling Nick Pickard and executive producer Hannah Cheers. 'I just didn't think I had anything left to bring because I get a lot of heavy hitting storylines and they take their toll. What was nice on my last day was that I did all my best bits and looked back: "Diane was happy. She did have a laugh!"'
