Twenty Photographs of the Week
This week's collection of images from around the world captures moments of conflict, diplomacy, and human resilience. From Russian drone attacks on Kyiv to Israeli strikes in Lebanon, and from Donald Trump's visit to Beijing to a young amputee skateboarder in Gaza, these photographs tell the stories that shaped the past seven days.
Middle East Conflict
In Marjayoun, Lebanon, flares fired by the Israeli military descend over the village of Arnoun. Israel has ordered roughly 14.3% of Lebanon's territory to be vacated since 2 March, displacing more than 1.2 million people. In Gaza City, Palestinians inspect damage in the al-Shati refugee camp after Israeli airstrikes, while Israeli demonstrators marched through Jerusalem chanting slogans. In Nabatieh, Lebanon, paramedics transport the body of a colleague killed in an Israeli airstrike. Despite a ceasefire on 17 April, Israeli attacks continue daily.
In Gaza City, 13-year-old Akram Sharif al-Fayoumi, an amputee skating enthusiast, shows off his skills near his family's tent. He lost his left arm and right leg in an Israeli airstrike. A woman walks past a mural depicting footballer Lamine Yamal waving a Palestinian flag during Barcelona's title-winning parade.
Ukraine Under Attack
In Kyiv, a woman takes photos of a residential building damaged in a Russian attack. Ukrainian monitors detected at least eight salvoes of Russian drones, targeting critical infrastructure. In Sloviansk, a man drives past the Hotel Ukraine, damaged in a Russian airstrike. Moscow targeted Ukraine with more than 800 drones in a large-scale daytime assault. In Kyiv, a woman lays flowers in front of a damaged home. Ukraine launched a large long-range drone attack on Russia, targeting the Ryazan oil refinery.
In Moscow, Vladimir Putin attended a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Intense Russian attacks this week appeared to undermine claims by Donald Trump that a peace deal was close.
UK Politics
In London, Prime Minister Keir Starmer left Downing Street via the back entrance after Wes Streeting quit as health secretary and called on Starmer to resign, urging a contest for the Labour leadership.
US and China Diplomacy
In Beijing, a young girl climbs to look through a gap in the doors to the prayer hall in the Temple of Heaven. Donald Trump landed in Beijing, the first US presidential visit to China in nearly a decade, seeking to mend relations. Trump walked through the Temple of Heaven with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The trip wrapped up with fanfare but little clarity on achievements.
In West Palm Beach, Florida, a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein's abuses was comforted after addressing a House oversight committee hearing. Democrats revealed new details of Epstein's international sex-trafficking ring and warned Trump not to pardon Ghislaine Maxwell.
In Annapolis, Maryland, US naval academy freshmen climbed the Herndon Monument at the end of their plebe year.
Global Events
In Port-au-Prince, Haiti, residents fled their homes to escape clashes between armed gangs. In Kidal, Mali, a fighter from the National Front for the Liberation of Azawad walked through a damaged building as Mali's armed forces, supported by Russian mercenaries, launched airstrikes against a rebel alliance.
In Tenerife, Spain, people in hazmat suits stood near a plane evacuating passengers from a hantavirus-stricken cruise ship. In Cobham, England, a 'green bridge' spans the A3 road, intended as a wildlife corridor for rare lowland heath. On Mount Everest, a trail of head torches marks the route to the summit. In Rome, Italy's Jannik Sinner reached the semi-finals at the Italian Open, setting a record for consecutive wins in Masters 1000 tournaments.
