Ex-Turnstile Guitarist Faces Attempted Murder Charges in Shocking Incident
Brady Ebert, the former guitarist of the Grammy-winning US hardcore band Turnstile, has been formally charged with attempted second-degree murder following a disturbing altercation. The charges stem from an alleged incident where Ebert is accused of hitting William Yates, the father of Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates, with his car outside the Yates family home in Maryland.
Details of the Alleged Attack
According to police reports from Montgomery County, the incident occurred on March 29. Authorities discovered William Yates outside his residence with severe injuries, including trauma to his lower extremities and a broken bone protruding from his leg. Family members provided statements indicating that Ebert drove up to the house, honked, swore, and initially drove away before returning. Police allege that Yates threw a rock at Ebert's vehicle, prompting Ebert to drive into him as he attempted to flee. Ebert is further accused of returning a third time to tell Yates that he "deserved it."
Ebert, 33, was arrested and taken into custody on March 31. In addition to the attempted murder charge, he faces one count of first-degree assault, as per Montgomery County arrest records, and is currently being held without bond. During court proceedings, Ebert protested his innocence, claiming that surveillance footage would contradict the accusers' accounts. However, Montgomery County district court judge Sherri D. Koch described the alleged attack as both violent and targeted.
Band's Response and Background
In a statement to Pitchfork, Turnstile confirmed that William Yates is recovering from surgery to address severe physical trauma to his legs, expressing gratitude for his survival. The band also revealed that they had severed ties with Ebert in 2022, citing a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community. They explained that after exhausting all resources to support his recovery, they set boundaries when healthy communication became impossible and he began threatening violence.
Ebert was a founding member of Turnstile, formed in 2010, and a childhood friend of Brendan Yates. Since his departure, he formed a band called the Self-Evident Truth but was ejected after posting allegations about Turnstile's finances and claiming that members had taken out a restraining order against him. In August 2022, a Maryland district court denied a request for a peace order against Ebert by a former bandmate, stating there was no statutory basis for relief.
Turnstile's statement continued, noting that Ebert's baseless tirades have persisted publicly over the years, with threats escalating recently. The band emphasized they have no language left for Brady and requested privacy during this difficult time.
Turnstile's Success and Recent Work
Based in Baltimore, Turnstile is recognized as the most successful hardcore group of their generation, boasting two Grammy awards and eight nominations. Their fourth album, "Never Enough," released in 2025, reached No. 9 in the US and No. 11 in the UK. This marked their first full-length record without Ebert, featuring Meg Mills on guitar and guest appearances from notable artists like Hayley Williams of Paramore, Dev Hynes (AKA Blood Orange), Shabaka Hutchings, Faye Webster, and producer AG Cook.
