Alexa Demie, known for her role as Maddy Perez in HBO's Euphoria, has revealed that she once feared she would lose her part if she declined to perform nude scenes. The 35-year-old actress, who has appeared in all three seasons of Sam Levinson's hit series, opened up about her experience in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Fear of Losing the Role
Demie admitted that she felt pressured to agree to nude scenes early in her career. 'I thought that if I said no to doing them, then I wouldn't have the part,' she said. 'Not because anyone ever said that to me, but because I was so young and I didn't know.'
She recalled a specific moment during the filming of the first season, when she was involved in a montage depicting Maddy cheating on Nate Jacobs. The actress realized she felt uncomfortable with the situation. 'I'm not saying I don't love sex, and I think it can be portrayed beautifully, and I know the show is portraying the life of teenage girls,' she explained. 'But once I did it, I realized, "Okay, I don't love how this feels." So I said something, and everyone was empathetic, and I never did that again.'
Controversy Surrounding Euphoria Season 3
The latest season of Euphoria has faced significant criticism for its graphic and sexual content. Fans have highlighted several disturbing moments, including scenes involving Sydney Sweeney's character, Cassie Howard. In one instance, Cassie rubs drugs on her genitals and performs a 'dog humiliation ritual.' In response to the backlash, Sweeney shared behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram with the caption: 'It's called… acting.'
Another controversial moment involved a graphic sex scene in front of a Nazi symbol, which drew widespread condemnation. Additionally, the death of Jacob Elordi's character, Nate Jacobs, sparked debate. Creator Sam Levinson defended the decision, telling Esquire: 'There's this kind of funny thing where I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma, and with that in mind, I always think, "Well, how can I give it to them?" How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn't so sure they wanted it?'
Finale and Availability
The season three finale of Euphoria airs in the United States on Monday night, with UK viewers able to watch it on Sky Atlantic and NOW from Monday. The show continues to generate discussion about its portrayal of teenage life and the boundaries of on-screen content.
