Cruz Beckham and his band The Breakers drew a strong turnout at Reading Festival, performing on The Canopy stage, which some online critics had dubbed the 'nepo stage.' Despite the nepotism label, the 21-year-old frontman proved his live performance skills, with proud parents Sir David and Victoria Beckham watching from the sidelines.
Strong Turnout and Confident Performance
The Breakers' set had a solid crowd, partly thanks to the rain providing shelter in the tent, but it was the music that kept them there. Cruz looked at home on stage, beaming and dancing energetically with guitar in hand. His dad sang along to every word, while Victoria waved to the crowd with her usual unreadable expression.
Cruz's guitar skills, better-than-average vocals, and the band's stage presence could be the ingredients for something special, if they get a good songwriting team behind them. He has been songwriting, with some lyrics seemingly taking a dig at his big brother Brooklyn, but a team could push his creativity and provide big hits.
Other Acts on the Canopy Stage
Cruz wasn't the only nepo on the Canopy Stage. Raye's sister Amma performed a short set on Saturday, with insane vocals clearly running in the family. Amma played tracks from her debut album Middle Child, but it was her cover of Unwritten that got the crowd singing along.
Also performing was Sombr, who drew a massive crowd but faced tech issues, with both screens going black for an entire song and bass drowning out his vocals.
Festival Crowd Energy Concerns
Throughout the festival, many acts faced a phenomenon of fans who seemed to have forgotten how to dance. Even pop icon Jade had a movement-resistant front pit, though she was on top form, opening with It Girl and getting people moving during her Little Mix mashup.
The main demographic at Reading is around 18-20 years old, which might explain the lack of energy. Without copious amounts of alcohol, people may be too self-conscious to get lost in the music. The hope is that this changes by next year's Glastonbury.
As for Worthy Farm's 2027 line-up, Cruz and The Breakers could make an appearance, primed for a Woodsies debut.
