Three siblings, Ramón, Elvira, and Ricard, were found wandering around Barcelona's Estació de França in 1984, aged five, four, and two. They carried no luggage or ID. A man they knew as Denis drove them there, left to buy sweets, and never returned. No adults came forward, and they entered the Spanish childcare system.
Mysterious beginnings
Unlike typical abandoned children, they were healthy, well-dressed, and articulate. A carer recalled they were a closed book about their past. Ramón later suspected their parents indoctrinated them not to share information. They were adopted by foster parents Lluís and Marisa, staying together and enjoying a happy childhood. But questions lingered.
DNA test sparks investigation
When Elvira started a family, she took a DNA test and began exploring results. The documentary series follows their search, which feels helter-skelter, mixing emotion, confusion, and startling new information. Ramón trawled his subconscious, remembering a toy store with a crocodile, a park with a fountain, a bad-tempered elderly woman in black, and picking up a gun that fired sparks on stone steps.
Uncovering the truth
Elvira assembled volunteer investigators and genealogists. The narrative involves several European countries, a post office robbery, a stolen identity, and a gang called the Gold Bandits of Andalucía. Through grainy photographs, they meet parents Ramón Sr and Rosario, a real-life Bonnie and Clyde who seemed in over their heads. Journalists, including the Guardian's Giles Tremlett, suspect the parents are dead, but the case isn't closed.
The search continues
Elvira has no intention of stopping. The series makes clear the search itself is the point. The siblings recreate childhood photos in a playground, making memories they can actually remember. "I wanted to know if they loved me," says Elvira. They may never learn everything, but they won't stop trying. Abandoned is on Disney+.
