Tate Modern will present 'Monet: Painting Time' from February 25 to June 27, 2027, featuring 60 paintings, making it the UK's largest presentation of Claude Monet's work in nearly a decade. The exhibition marks 100 years since the artist's death and includes 20 paintings from his 'Water Lilies' series, with rare loans from Japanese institutions.
First solo Monet show at Tate Modern in 26 years
Despite being open for 26 years, Tate Modern has never hosted a solo exhibition dedicated to Claude Monet. The gallery confirmed full details for the show, which was first announced in March as part of its 2027 programme. The exhibition will cover Monet's work from his early 1870s pieces through to his final works in the 1920s.
Standard ticket prices have not yet been confirmed, but entry will be free for Tate Members, and anyone aged 16-25 can get in for £5 by joining Tate Collective.
Exhibition focuses on Monet's response to modern time
Rather than a chronological overview, the show focuses on Monet's obsession with capturing fleeting moments, set against the backdrop of the rise of railways and the invention of standardised time zones. It includes his 1877 steam-filled studies of Paris's Gare Saint-Lazare, such as 'Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare', and atmospheric views of London, including 'Waterloo Bridge, London, at Dusk' and 'Charing Cross Bridge, Smoke in Fog, Impression'.
The exhibition also brings together several of Monet's famous series, including six works from his 'Grainstacks' series (1890–91) on loan from global collections, alongside highlights from 'Rouen Cathedral', 'Poplars on the Banks of the Epte' and 'Mornings on the Seine'.
Water Lilies and curatorial details
Monet spent the last three decades of his life painting the pond in his Giverny garden. Tate is bringing together 20 of these paintings for the show, including rare loans from Japanese institutions. The exhibition is curated by Juliet Bingham and Genevieve Barton, organised jointly with the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.
