Dan Dare Returns: B7 Comics Launches Modern Space Hero Reboot
Dan Dare Reboot: B7 Comics Unveils Modern Graphic Novel

Dan Dare: First Contact Blasts Off with Modern Twist

In a thrilling revival of classic British comics, B7 Comics is set to publish Dan Dare: First Contact, a graphic novel written by Alex de Campi and illustrated by Marc Laming. This reboot of the iconic 1950s space hero arrives at a perfect time, as public interest in space exploration soars with events like NASA's Artemis II moon mission and the success of sci-fi films such as Project Hail Mary.

A Timely Comeback for a Beloved Character

Colonel Dan Dare, who first appeared in the Eagle comic on April 14, 1950, is being reinvented for the 21st century with the approval of the Dan Dare Corporation. De Campi, inspired by rereading old Frank Hampson strips, pitched the idea, leading to this collaboration with Laming and B7 Comics, known for its work with British icons like Tony Hancock.

Rebuilding the Legend from Scratch

The new graphic novel goes back to basics, requiring no prior knowledge from readers. It features familiar characters such as Professor Jocelyn Peabody and Digby, alongside the villainous Mekon, but with significant updates:

  • Digby is now a young, working-class engineer from Wigan, moving away from his original role as a bumbling servant.
  • Professor Peabody is of Indian descent, adding depth to themes of colonization in space exploration.
  • The setting is a future Earth ravaged by climate change, with Britain portrayed as a progressive leader in space flight, contrasting with a privatized United Corporations of America.

Embracing Heritage While Moving Forward

Andrew Mark Sewell of B7 Comics emphasized the balance between honoring the original's hope and wonder and making it relevant for modern audiences. The 100-page graphic novel, scheduled for release in November after a successful Kickstarter campaign, aims to attract new readers while staying true to Dan Dare's essential DNA. This project marks another iteration in Dare's history, following appearances in 2000AD and other comics, but focuses on a fresh, accessible approach to space adventure stories.
