In 1971, Neil Cossons and I served as staff members at Liverpool Museum, where he extended an invitation for me to join him on a visit to Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire. During our excursion, we marveled at the Blists Hill furnace, the iconic bridge, the surrounding architectural structures, and their picturesque setting. Shortly after this formative experience, Cossons assumed the role of director at Ironbridge Gorge, marking the beginning of his influential tenure in heritage management.
