Norman Osland, a 62-year-old IT manager from Hertfordshire, has named his top five pie and mash shops after visiting 112 venues across London and Essex. His number one pick is M.Manze on Tower Bridge Road in Southwark, central London.
Osland, who describes himself as "obsessed" with pie and mash, has eaten the traditional British dish regularly since he was two years old. His extensive culinary tour has cost approximately £2,500, including transport expenses. He is currently writing his second book on the dish, which is typically served with a parsley-based liquor sauce.
Top five pie and mash shops according to Osland
The full ranking is as follows:
- M.Manze, Tower Bridge Road, Southwark
- G Kelly, Roman Road, Bow
- Maureen's Pie & Mash, Chrisp Street Market, Poplar
- Eastenders Pie & Mash, Chrisp Street Market, Poplar
- Bert's Pie & Mash, High Street, Wickford, Essex
Osland said his enthusiasm for pie and mash goes beyond the food itself. He explained: "For me, it's the people. It's not just the people that you might meet and chat to in the shop itself, but the owners and the staff and the atmosphere is really good."
Recognition and family reactions
Osland acknowledged that he is starting to gain recognition for his expertise. He has even been approached for a selfie, which he finds "a little bit embarrassing," but he believes that "it's good to be recognised for what I've done." His wife takes pride in his achievements, though he jokingly admits that his continuous discussion about pie and mash is "driving them mad."
Future of pie and mash
Reflecting on the future of the dish, Osland commented: "It's going to evolve, it's going to change, and it'll still be available hopefully long after I've left this Earth, and hopefully for years to come." His ranking highlights both historic London establishments and a newer Essex venue, showing the dish's continued appeal across the region.
