The Bayeux Tapestry has returned to the United Kingdom for the first time in almost 1,000 years, ahead of a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition at the British Museum. Ticket demand has been unprecedented, with all slots until the end of 2026 sold out. A second sale later this year will offer tickets for 2027. For history enthusiasts, the market town of Battle makes a perfect day out, combining the tapestry with the site of the Battle of Hastings.
Battle Abbey: Where History Unfolded
Battle Abbey stands on the exact spot where the Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066. Visitors can walk the battlefield, explore the ruins of William the Conqueror's abbey, and enjoy a wood-carved sculpture trail and audio tour. The abbey's gateway dominates the south end of Battle High Street. Highlights include the Novices Common Room, the visitor centre, and a walled garden. Children will love the 11th-century-themed playground with climbable barrels, carts, and a wooden ox. The café offers hot drinks and light refreshments with views of the battlefield.
Events and Discounts
A battle re-enactment is scheduled for October 10-11, 2026. English Heritage has reduced ticket prices on family days until September 1, 2026. The town of Battle features independent shops, historic pubs, and timber-framed buildings, including Battle Brewery, a taproom serving 1066-inspired beers, and The Almonry, a volunteer-run garden with a museum.
