Tony Thorpe, best known as the guitarist for the 1970s pop group The Rubettes, has died at the age of 80 after a period of failing health.
Early life and career
Thorpe first picked up a guitar and drums at age 11, turning professional five years later at a gig with Wee Willie Harris. In 1974, he co-founded The Rubettes, whose debut single Sugar Baby Love reached number one on the UK charts and stayed there for four weeks.
Family statement
A statement from Thorpe's family read: 'It is with great sadness that we officially announce the passing of Anthony John Thorpe. He was a father to Clay, a husband to Shirle, a friend to many, and a mentor to countless musicians young and old.'
The statement added: 'His recently failing health did little to diminish his fierce intellect and sharp sense of humour. He will leave an unfillable hole in the lives of all who knew him, or his music. Our love and thoughts go to his son Clayton.'
Legacy
Thorpe's contribution to music extended beyond his chart-topping hit, as he mentored many musicians throughout his life. His son Clayton survives him.
