Prince Charles Cinema saved with new 25-year lease

The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square has been saved from potential closure after signing a new 25-year lease with no break clause. The announcement was made on the cinema's Instagram on the morning of October 15, 2026, ending a period of uncertainty that lasted 21 months.

Deal secures cinema's future after landlord dispute

The cult cinema had faced the threat of closure since the start of 2025, when its landlord, Zedwell LSQ Ltd, and their parent company Criterion Capital, proposed adding a six-month break clause to the contract. The Prince Charles launched a petition against the break clause, which gained significant public support.

In May 2025, Westminster City Council declared the cinema an Asset of Community Value, granting it additional protections from redevelopment. Despite this, the cinema's boss, Ben Freedman, told LBC in August 2026 that a resolution had still not been found. However, both parties have now reached an agreement.

Cinema thanks supporters after 21 months of uncertainty

A spokesperson for the cinema said: "The Prince Charles Cinema is thrilled to announce that we have signed a new 25-year lease with no break clause, ensuring our projectors will keep rolling for years to come."

The spokesperson added: "After 21 months of uncertainty, we’re delighted to have secured the future of the cinema, and we couldn’t have done it without the support, commitment and belief of many, many people."

The cinema expressed gratitude to the 168,645 people who signed the petition, the Soho Society for recommending the Asset of Community Value designation, and Westminster Council for granting it. They also thanked the media, filmmakers, and staff who supported the campaign.

Landmark venue to continue for at least another 25 years

The new lease ensures the cinema will continue operating in Leicester Square for the foreseeable future. The spokesperson concluded: "We are so incredibly thankful to each and every one of you. You have all placed your trust in us, and as we continue on for at least another 25 years, we promise to never forget that. We’ll be right here…"
