The Guardian has issued corrections for two errors in recent articles. The first correction addresses a misattribution regarding the Footlights group, while the second clarifies the debut year of Sacha Baron Cohen's character Ali G.
Footlights error: Edinburgh vs Cambridge
An editing error in a feature article incorrectly stated that the Edinburgh University group Footlights was a source of the Fringe's student comedic talent. In fact, the Edinburgh Footlights is a musical theatre group, not a comedy troupe.
The intended reference was to the Cambridge University society of the same name, which has an established tradition of performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The correction appears in the article titled 'This used to be a place to mess around', published on 20 August in G2, page 6.
Ali G debut year corrected
Separately, the Diary column from 29 August (page 39) contained an error regarding Sacha Baron Cohen's character Ali G. The character debuted in 1998, not 20 years ago as stated in the original text.
Other amended articles
The Guardian also listed several other recently amended articles. These include a piece about UK sanctions on Israeli settlements, which was described as a great victory but must be only the beginning. Another amended article covered Macklemore being dropped from Ed Sheeran's US tour after a 'free Palestine' speech.
Additional corrections were made to an article about managing dandruff at home and when to seek help, described as not glamorous but common. A further correction involved a report on a Russian warship firing flares at a Danish helicopter as Nato jets shot down a drone over Lithuania.
