The Unforgettable Journey of Benny the Cat
In 2006, outside a supermarket in Bahrain, Alan Peevers encountered two three-month-old kittens, Benny and his brother Buster, who were attempting to climb into his shopping bags to reach the food they could smell. Immediately smitten, Peevers took them in, marking the start of a remarkable 16-year relationship that would span multiple countries and create lifelong memories.
A Global Companion Through Life's Adventures
As an advertising creative director, Peevers followed work opportunities that led him to Kenya, Qatar, back to Bahrain, and finally to Manchester. Benny and Buster accompanied him on this journey, with Peevers often remarking that they had seen more countries than most people. This nomadic lifestyle was interesting but lonely, and the arrival of the kittens made a significant difference, providing companionship and joy.
While Peevers was besotted with both cats, it was Benny, with his endearing quirks and loving nature, who truly stole his heart. Unlike most felines, Benny had an unusual attraction to water. He loved paddling in the bath, often jumping in as it filled up to wade around or sticking his head under the tap. At other times, he would patiently wait on the edge of the tub until Peevers was done, then slide in for his own soak.
Quirky Habits and Signs of Contentment
Benny was one of the most affectionate cats Peevers had ever known. Whenever Peevers lay on the couch, Benny would jump up and nestle in the crook of his arm, showcasing his loving personality. Since Benny and Buster were indoor cats, Peevers grew grass in a plant pot for them to chew on. This small patch, about 20 square centimeters, became Benny's private indoor lawn, where he would sit as if it were his own personal oasis.
About half an hour before dinner time, Peevers would typically find Benny lying on his back with his paws in the air. This was the only time of day he exhibited this behavior, which Peevers interpreted as a sign of utter contentment at the prospect of being fed and perhaps with his life in general. He noted that he had never seen a cat look happier.
A Brave Battle with Illness
In 2021, Benny was diagnosed with cancer, which was deemed inoperable, and he was given about six months to live. However, thanks to Peevers' pampering and care, Benny defied the odds and survived for another three years. During this time, he became thinner and weaker but always appeared to be enjoying life, even managing an occasional paddle in the bath.
Eventually, the day came when Peevers realized that Benny had had enough. Taking him to the vet to say goodbye was the hardest thing Peevers had ever done. He sat in the car park for an hour afterward, unable to stop crying. To this day, Peevers thinks of Benny every time he runs a bath, remembering the unique bond they shared.
This story highlights the profound impact pets can have on our lives, offering companionship through life's ups and downs. Benny's memory lives on as a testament to the love and joy that animals bring into our world.
