Popeyes Beats Rival to Launch 'Mega' US-Style Sauce Cups in UK
Popeyes launches supersized 'Mega Dips' in UK

American fast food chain Popeyes has fired the latest salvo in the UK's fried chicken wars by launching a range of 'supersized' sauce cups, directly rivalling a signature item from its US competitor, Raising Cane's. The move brings a distinctly American approach to portion sizes to British shores, challenging the trend of 'shrinkflation' with what the chain calls 'Mega Dips'.

The Sauce Cup Showdown

The new Mega Dips are served in 450g cups, a dramatic increase from the typical small pots of condiment. Customers can choose from three flavours: classic Ranch, a smoky Cajun-inspired 'Kickback' sauce, and a warm Cheese dip, each priced at £3.99. For those wanting a more moderate option, Popeyes is also offering a 'Big Dip' in a 160ml size for £1.99.

This launch is a clear pre-emptive strike against rival chain Raising Cane's, which is famous in the United States for selling its 'Secret Sauce' in large 32-ounce soda cups and has announced plans to open in London in 2026. By introducing its own giant dips now, Popeyes has effectively beaten its competitor to the punch, claiming the title of the first quick-service restaurant in the UK to offer such a product.

Public and Critical Reaction

The launch has already proven commercially successful, with the chain reporting that 115,000 portions of the Mega and Big Dips have already been sold. On social media, reaction has been divided. Some fans have hailed the giant servings as "unreal", "banging", and a "dream come true". Influencers like @thedarcytwins praised Popeyes for "giving fans what they want," naming the cheese dip as their favourite in a review.

However, not all feedback has been positive. Some commentators have expressed concern over the introduction of US-style portion sizes, with one TikTok user, @sulemann17, stating plainly: "We don’t need US portion sizes here man." Others, like @sandra55171, accused the chain of simply "copying Raising Cane's."

A Taste Test Verdict

In a professional assessment, Metro's specialist food writer tried all three flavours. The verdict was mixed. While the Kickback and Ranch sauces were praised for being "interesting" and pairing well with chicken, the Cheese dip was criticised for having a "very artificial flavour." The reviewer's main reservation, however, was the sheer volume, noting that a Mega Dip contained "way more sauce than I ever could have possibly needed for my meal," leading to potential waste unless shared.

Dave Hoskins, Head of Food at Popeyes UK, said of the launch: "Inspired by the worldwide love for huge dips, we thought it was about time to bring that extra bit of sauce to Popeyes in the UK. These oversized dips are the perfect pairing for our Shatter Crunchin’ chicken and are here to bring maximum flavour to the menu." The Mega Dips form part of the chain's new festive menu, offering an indulgent option for the Christmas season.
