Pizzo: Europe's Ice Cream Capital with 19 Gelato Shops

Pizzo, a clifftop town in southern Italy's Calabria region, has been declared Europe's ice cream capital, according to new data from Avis. The town boasts 19 ice cream shops, 15 of which are five-star rated, and is the birthplace of Tartufo, a hand-rolled gelato filled with molten dark chocolate.

History and Landmarks

Pizzo's most famous landmark is Castello Murat, an ancient fortress named after Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law, who spent his final hours there before being executed in 1815. The castle, which defended Ferdinand I of Aragon's kingdom, is one of the best-preserved Aragonese fortresses in Calabria. The Murattiano Museum inside tells Murat's story, with entry at €5 (£4.26).

For art lovers, Chiesa di Piedigrotta is a must-see. This 17th-century church is carved into a cave overlooking a bay, featuring elaborate stone statues carved by local shopkeeper Angelo Barone in the 19th century.

Piazza della Repubblica, a three-minute walk from the castle, is a cluster of cafes and restaurants. Gelateria Artigianale Dante Pizzo is a top gelato shop, with Tripadvisor visitors calling it a 'guilty pleasure' and 'absolute must-visit'. The Old Town (Centro Storico) features pastel-colored buildings and cobbled streets.
