Foreign crisps top holidaymakers' favourite things abroad

Holidaymakers have revealed that one of their favourite things about going abroad is trying foreign crisps, according to a new survey. The study, conducted by travel company Kuoni, found that 47% of British travellers consider sampling unique crisps flavours as a highlight of their trips.

Unique flavours draw travellers

The survey of 2,000 UK adults showed that exotic crisps varieties such as paprika, prawn cocktail, and salted egg are particularly popular among tourists. Many respondents said they actively seek out local crisp brands when visiting new countries, with some even bringing packets home as souvenirs.

Kuoni's research also indicated that 23% of holidaymakers have tried crisps flavours they would never find in the UK, with flavours like 'ketchup' in Canada and 'wasabi' in Japan being noted as favourites.

Snacking as a cultural experience

According to the survey, 31% of Brits believe that trying local snacks is an important part of experiencing a destination's culture. Food and drink, including crisps, are seen as a way to connect with local traditions. Kuoni's spokesperson said: "It's fascinating to see how something as simple as crisps can become a memorable part of a holiday. Our research shows that travellers are increasingly looking for authentic experiences, and trying local snacks is a fun and easy way to do that."

Impact on travel choices

The findings suggest that snack preferences can even influence travel decisions. 15% of respondents said they would choose a destination based on the unique crisps flavours available. This trend is particularly strong among younger travellers aged 18-34, with 22% saying they consider crisps when booking a holiday.

Kuoni's survey also revealed that 68% of holidaymakers have purchased crisps abroad that they later tried to find in the UK, but were unable to. This highlights the appeal of exclusive flavours that are not available domestically.
