Before it closed in 2021, Lewisham's Model Market was a top destination for street food in London. Now, food lovers can celebrate as it reopens this summer. New images give a first glimpse of the much-loved venue's transformation.
A New Chapter for Model Market
The revived Model Market is part of a larger redevelopment of Lewisham Shopping Centre by developer Landsec, which includes a music venue and new shops, cafés, and bars. Landsec has permission to rebuild the centre with 1,700 new homes. The market will return as a hub for independent kitchens, local makers, and creative spaces.
Construction is underway, and renders show a refurbished market that retains its 1950s charm. Expect iconic food stalls, pot plants, trendy brick decor, and long benches for relaxed, sunny drinks.
History and Revival
Model Market began in the 1950s as a trading site known for Black-owned businesses. It reopened as a street food market in 2014 and became a staple of London's food scene. It closed in September 2021 when operator Street Feast went out of business.
Now, German Kraft, established in 2017 at Elephant and Castle's Mercato Metropolitano, will run the market. Known for authentic Franconian beers, they will have a taproom on site and curate the food traders. A list of traders is not yet available, but the market has called for those who cook, craft, brew, bake, or create.
An exact opening date is not confirmed, but it is expected later this summer. For more information, visit the Model Market website.
